How Much Does an Animated Explainer Video Cost?

Explainer pricing, what drives it, and why the script matters more than the animation.

The short answer

Most professionally produced explainer videos start around $10K, and the price scales with length, visual complexity, and how many versions you need. Template-based explainers exist for less, and we'll get to why they usually cost more than they save.

We design motion graphics and explainers in-house at NoraVera, mostly for SaaS products, internal comms, and onboarding. Here's how the pricing actually works.

What drives explainer pricing

  • The script and concept - The unglamorous truth: the script is most of the work. Compressing a complicated product into 90 seconds that a stranger can follow takes more drafts than anyone expects. It's also the part that decides whether the video works.
  • Illustration style - Custom-designed characters, scenes, and a visual system built for your brand cost more than off-the-shelf assets. They're also the difference between a video that looks like yours and a video that looks like everyone's.
  • Length - Animation is priced in seconds, not minutes. 60 to 90 seconds is the sweet spot for most explainers. Every extra 30 seconds adds real production time.
  • Voiceover and music - Professional VO talent and properly licensed music. Small line items that make a large difference.
  • Versions and cutdowns - A 90-second hero explainer plus a 30-second cut and a 15-second social teaser costs less than three separate videos, but more than one.

Why template explainers underdeliver

You've seen them: the same flat characters, the same whiteboard hand, the same stock soundtrack. They're cheap because nothing about them was made for you. The problem is the job an explainer has to do. It's often the first real explanation of your product a prospect ever sees. Generic visuals quietly say generic product, and that impression costs more than the savings.

How to get the most from the budget

Ruthlessly cut the script before adding seconds. A tight 60-second video beats a flabby two-minute one every time. Plan your cutdowns up front so they're built into the design instead of bolted on. And think beyond marketing: the same explainer that sells your product externally often works for onboarding and internal training with light edits.
